I kinda like retail flagships. I also don't believe there is such a thing as a "badass candy store" and again, I would really like to see something that doesn't involve food succeeding downtown!! No more ice cream, candy, cupcakes, bars, restaurants... ENOUGH!!!!

I want a store where I can buy something tangible to take home with me. Anything. Ya know, I've lived most of my 3.5+ decades in or near Tacoma. Would you believe I've NEVER bought any durable goods in downtown Tacoma. Ever. I was too young to shop at Schoenfeld's, I wasn't interested in the camera shop before it left (I would be now). I don't like running, therefore no use for the running store. I have never had a reason to go to the Learning Sprout. I tried to look for a book or two at the UW Bookstore and they didn't have what I needed. I've bought things in downtown Portland, Seattle, Salt Lake City.

Sad, really.

Lots of thought in this thread.

This is bad in all respects for T-Town. It's only middlingly good for Seattle.

In this economy, towns like Tacoma will suffer more than big cities.

It HAS to be homegrown. No major corporation is going to move to Tacoma - that is reality. It will take local chutzpah to make the promise a reality.

All in all, it's sad.

Patricia, you are a breath of fresh air. Thank you for your points and especially your examples. I am used to hearing a lot of generalizations backed with zero substance.

The dome district is a logical place to start. Access from multiple angles and freeways works for me, although there might not be enough residents in the immediate area to entice a large grocery market such as Whole Foods.

Other large retailers could fit nicely in the dome district, come to think of it. I like it.

More truth spoken by you: many first-time visitors to Tacoma have only the view from Pacific Avenue for a memory. We could absolutely use a better main drag.
